Bookseller Borders compiled their list of the best kids' books of 2009, and it included several graphic-related titles.
Nickelodeon Magazine presents the winners of its Comics Awards. Polling thousands of kids, this leading entertainment and humor publication for kids selected winners in eight categories. The award recognizes best comic books, strips, and graphic novels for young readers published in the United States.
The Eisner Awards are considered by many to be the most prestigious award the comics industry offers. It is named after one of the pioneers of the field and includes a lengthy and thorough list of categories recognizing the many different areas of hard work that go into a graphic novel. The are awarded at Comic-Con in San Diego each July.
YALSA, the Young Adult Library Association, presents annual picks of graphic titles at the ALA Midwinter Meeting. The books are recommended for those ages 12-18 and are selected based on the merits of being good quality literature and having appeal to teens.
Each year, the ALA picks a list of graphic novels suited for readers ages 12–18. The list has been prepared since 2007 and includes a lengthy list of all honored graphic novels and a top 10 for each year.
Named after Harvey Kurtzman, the founding editor of Mad magazine, the Harvey Awards nominate and select the most excellent titles in comics each year. The nominees are selected by comics creators themselves and voted on by the creative community at large.
Michael L. Printz was a children’s librarian from Topeka, Kansas, who is recognized now with a yearly award for children’s literature in his name. The award comes from the American Library Association, and is sponsored by its magazine Booklist, as well as the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA).
The Robert F. Sibert awards recognize the top nonfiction books of the year for children.
The Alex Awards are presented each year by the American Library Association to recognize books written for adults that are also rewarding for kids ages 12–18. Ten books are selected each year, and occasionally graphic novels are among them.
