Comics Out Loud

Tagged:
Here's a very cool event coming up. If you're in the New York area, it's definitely worth checking out. The Society of Illustrators (128 East 63rd Street) is giving comics fans a unique opportunity to watch the creative process unfold in the hands of some massively talented people, including Louise Simonson, Walt Simonson, Bob Wiacek, Chris Sotomayor, and John Workman. The entire day, called Comics Out Loud, will be curated by Danny Fingeroth.

I had a lot of fun meeting Chris Wilson a few months ago at the Miami Book Fair, so I was thrilled to hear that he's recently been named the technology instructor for the Nixa, Missouri, public school system's new STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) magnet school, which will include grades K through 6. The school will open next year.

We Can Be Heroes

DC Entertainment is doing a very cool thing. It's teaming the Justice League with real-world charitable organizations Save the Children, MercyCorps, and International Rescue Committee to help raise money and awareness for hunger in the Horn of Africa (which includes Ethiopia, Somalia, and Kenya). Because they're facing a horrible drought, the worst in six decades, millions of people are in danger and facing starvation. DC is matching donations 100 percent (50 percent on items purchased).
Annie Graham is a sophomore at Stanford University who may or may not declare herself an English major this year. She is from Phoenix, Arizona, and is interested in education reform, farming, and, most recently, graphic novels.

Congratulations, Calista!

Congratulations are in order to Calista Brill for being named a senior editor at First Second! I've met Calista a couple times, and also interviewed her for GNR. She's a great talent, and I hope this promotion will result in even more great books coming from her direction.

Goodbye, Joe

Earlier this year, I had the distinct pleasure of interviewing Joe Simon. It was one of the rare treats of my career.
