If you live in Manhattan, you’re already deathly afraid of bedbugs. Spider Island might be the most terrifying Spider-Man story ever.

A mad scientist unleashes a plague of biting pests on New York City, and suddenly, thousands of normal people are turned into variations of Spider-Man. They gain his strength, his spider sense, his agility, and more. Some of them go about doing good works, some turn villainous, but worst of all, they’re all being driven mad.

Dan Slott has written a rollicking fun Spider-Man story here. Mostly, it’s an enjoyable, light read packed with a lot of superhero action. Most fun of all is the onslaught of cameos from various Marvel superheroes, all of whom join in to help Spider-Man out. This is like a blast from the past, a comic story that just wants to be about pure enjoyment and entertainment rather than an “event.” More power to it.

The hardcover edition includes some extras, like an interview with Slott, and additional behind-the-scenes peeks. You’ll savor the comic and enjoy it for the fun adventure it is.
