Title: Honey and clover
Author: Chica Umino
Comment: This manga follows the lives of five college students as they try to find themselves and make the transition into adulthood. Sometimes serious and most often humorous, this is an excellent coming of age story.

Title: Fables 11: War and Pieces
Author: Bill Willingham with Mark Buckinham
Comment: I got into Fables because I loved the cover artist, but I became quickly absorbed by the spectacular interior art and the brilliant storytelling. Fables 11: War and Pieces is a collection of the story arch in which the fables of Fabletown finally make dramatic stand against the Adversary in order to reclaim their homelands. It was awesome.

Title: Blue
Author: Kiriko Nananan
Comment: A beautiful book I've reread quite a few times. The slow pacing, minimal detail and stark black & white make for a really immersing experience about two girls dealing with life and their feelings for each other.

Title: Freakangels
Author: Warren Ellis and Paul Duffield
Comment: I really like Warren Ellis' works but in this case I just feel that the story lack a bit of momentum. Maybe future volumes will be different but so far it's a bit disapointing

Title: Empowered
Author: Adam Warren
Comment: Adam Warren knows fandom and about it various embarrassing little secrets and fetishes. He knows about the superhero milieu and all it's troupes, cliches, and various “formulas”. He know how to fashion a solid story with believe characters enough were your more paying attention to what's happening to them because of the very fact its about “them” and not that it happens to be insane stuff going on around them. Add that to his amazing kinetic pencils and panel work (that's right not ink to be seen) and you have a damn solid and entertaining comic package. I can't wait to get my copy of Empowered and neither can my friends because they want to read it too.

Title: That Salty Air
Author: Tim Sievert
Comment: I took one look at the cover of Tim Sievert's That Salty Air (Top Shelf) and knew that I wasn't going to be able to put it down ... and I didn't. Tim Sievert's tale of love lost and love ignored is a sad but exciting little book--beautiful in both word and line. Plus, it combines two of my favorite things: black-and-white "indie" graphic novels and harrowing tales of the sea! Not to mention a giant octopus. I've never seen any of Tim Sievert's other work but now I can't wait for his next book. Highly recommended.

Title: Capitol Reflections
Author: Jonathan Javitt
Comment: This is book that I recently won from another web site. It really held my attention all through the book although a few times talking about the molucules of coffee kind of lost me. The rest of the book was a real thriller first class. Well worth the read.

Title: Disappearance Diary
Author: Hideo Azuma
Comment: Disappearance Diary is an autobiographical story about a manga artist with a little too much on his plate. The story details his decision to run away from his hectic life, leaving everything behind to live in the woods as a homeless man. Azuma does an amazing job making this book extremely cheerful and positive even though the subject matter is rather grim. If you've ever had the slightest urge to run away from all of your responsibilities, even for a short time, you'll enjoy Hideo Azuma's adventures as a homeless person in Disappearance Diary.

Title: Astonishing X-Men Volume 2 HC
Author: written by Joss Whedon, art by John Cassaday
Comment: Collects the final 13 issues of Joss Whedon's 25-issue X-Men run, with superb graphic storytelling by John Cassaday. Suspenseful, emotional and witty, this represents the absolute best of what can be done with corporately owned, serialized, shared universe characters.

Title: The War at Ellsmere
Author: Faith Erin Hicks
Comment: This is YA fiction the way I like it. It's set in a boarding school, with a classic conflict between knowing insiders and smart outsider. The characters are familiar, but they're not stereotypical.

Title: Three Shadows
Author: Cyril Pedrosa
Comment: Three Shadows is a book that Cyril wrote while attempting to come to grips with the death of a small child of a close friend, which tells a story about Joachim and his parents, who live an ideal farming life, in a beautiful countryside. This all comes to a halt when the family begins to be followed by three dark shadows who seem to be after Joachim. It is a haunting, and beautiful, if not some times depressing story. Cyril’s past as an animator shines in this book, which reads more like an animated movie then it does a book. The only week point is that there is one seemingly unnecessary side story toward the end of the novel. It is a great book, and well worth reading.

Title: Adolf
Author: Osamu Tezuka
Comment: A true must-read by the titan from Toyonaka, Japan, "The Father" Osamu Tezuka. With Black Jack getting recent critical acclaim due to the publishing care taken by literary philanthropists Vertical Inc., it's only deserving that Tezuka's fictive historical masterpiece receive an equally deserved widespread audience. Amazingly honest and riveting work from Tezuka, who never fails to deliver what comics do best - tell amazing stories.

Title: The Shazam! Archives, Vol. 2

Comment: There's definitely some interesting reading here, although I must admit that I don't quite see why Captain Marvel was as hugely popular as he was back in the day.

Title: Strange Embrace
Author: David Hine
Comment: It's definitely an interesting tale, fairly well-executed. It's a horror story, but more of a high-caliber Twilight Zone than a zombie/gore fest, the likes of which have been considerably more popular the last few years.
