The Return of...Tron!
I don't care what anybody says, Tron was one of the coolest sci-fi movies of the '80s. Okay, that's not exactly true. It's not one of the best. It probably is one of the cheesiest, though, and as such, it ranks up there with the best of guilty pleasures. And it inspired a videogame that completely befuddled me a child. I was drawn to it time and time again in the arcade, but I never really knew how to play it. What was going on with it? I have no idea. But anyway, that's neither here nor there. The big news is that Tron is coming back and it's not (apparently...or should I say hopefully) one of those god-awful remakes based on something from the '80s that really has no reason for existing other than someone, somewhere will recognize the title. I say all that with more than a little bit of optimism, because I really don't know anything about the upcoming new Tron movie, nothing other than this description from Disney:
Tron is a 3D high-tech adventure set in a digital world that’s unlike anything ever captured on the big screen. Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund), the tech-savvy 27-year-old son of Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges), looks into his father’s disappearance and finds himself pulled into the same world of fierce programs and gladiatorial games where his father has been living for 25 years. Along with Kevin’s loyal confidant (Olivia Wilde), father and son embark on a life-and-death journey across a visually-stunning cyber universe that has become far more advanced and exceedingly dangerous.
Did you read that? Jeff Bridges, back again for more! That's what's awesome about this. Bridges is easily one of the most underrated actors working today. His involvement gives me great hope that this will be so much more than just an exercise in what CGI technology can do now. This time, it could be even better than a guilty pleasure (let's hope).
