Jina Han could be your average Korean high school girl, except that her family is cursed. And it’s such a serious curse that she will probably die soon unless someone can find a way to break it.
This started some time back, when her ancestor thought killing a magical serpent (known in Korean mythology as an Imugi) would do the family good. He couldn’t have been more wrong. Imugis have to be serpents for 1,000 years, at which point they can become dragons, which is their goal. This Imugi was hunted down and killed one day before becoming a dragon. Absolutely furious, the magical creature laid a curse on the family that caused its death. In each generation, one person in the family will be murdered. Furthermore, they will be murdered by two people whom they trust and who are close to them.
Flash forward to 1999. Jina is an eleventh grader thinking about college, friends, and boys. She’s unaware that her parents are constantly fretting over who will die in the new generation. It could be Jina, her younger brother, or her cousin. This cousin, who’s been living in the United States, returns to Korea with a psychic friend. There’s soon some romantic tension between Jina and her cousin’s friend, and the friend’s psychic powers grow increasingly important to the plot.
Jina’s parents try to figure out who’ll be the next to die. A medium is brought in and he determines that Jina will be the murder victim. He suggests an exorcism might prevent this, only to charge the family a ridiculous amount for it. Then, when he’s doing the exorcism, he seems to go into a trance and tries to kill Jina himself. It appears the family has come to a dead end.
As for Jina, it isn’t until the second volume that she learns about the curse. In the first volume, it’s only other people talking about it. Finally she meets with an aunt who confesses to a murder she committed, saying it was the family curse. Now Jina’s terrified. If someone close to her will kill her, who will it be? Her mother? Her father? Her best friend? The medium says her killers will come from her grand uncle’s house, but can he be trusted? Or is he only in it for the money?
Two Will Come is a creepy, mysterious manhwa with a spine-tingling theme. As volume two finishes, it’s still unclear how things will pan out. Jina even seems to be growing some psychic powers of her own, seeing a ghost that her cousin’s friend thought only he could see. The use of psychic powers and mysticism works well with the story’s subject matter. And as a bonus, the second volume has an afterword that explains the legend behind Imugis.
