Lights, Camera, Middle School! (Babymouse Tales from the Locker)

Written by Jennifer L. Holm with illustrations by Matthew Holm

LIGHTS, CAMERA, MIDDLE SCHOOL!: Babymouse Tales from the Locker is the first in a new series from Jennifer Holm and illustrator Matthew Holm. This new series follows their beloved character Babymouse. Unlike the previous books, however, this is not a graphic novel but a novel with illustrations much like the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series.

"LIGHTS, CAMERA, MIDDLE SCHOOL! is a fun story about friendship and filmmaking. There is plenty of humor throughout the story that is enhanced by the cute illustrations."

LIGHTS, CAMERA, MIDDLE SCHOOL! follows Babymouse as she begins the school year wanting to join a club and ends up finding the film club. The film club allows the club members to take on a role in the filmmaking process as they create a movie from start to finish and then present it to the school. Babymouse gets inspired and writes out an elaborate epic screenplay that spans countries, time and genres. The screenplay lands Babymouse the role of director and that power quickly begins to go to her head as she takes control of the movie and her friends.

This book is closer to the younger age range of middle grade fiction and with the illustrations it makes for an easier read. Babymouse as a character is very childish, but elementary school readers would really like this story. The illustrations were great additions to the story and definitely aided in storytelling. The best part of the illustrations is that they added even more comedy and were able to visualize some of the hilarious scenes that occurred while they filmed the movie.

I loved that the story talked about filmmaking in a more technical way than most books of this age category. Middle grade readers interested in the medium can learn quite a lot from this book. They can really take away a lot of information about the filmmaking process and I found it even more educational with the glossary in the back of the book.

LIGHTS, CAMERA, MIDDLE SCHOOL! is a fun story about friendship and filmmaking. There is plenty of humor throughout the story that is enhanced by the cute illustrations. Any middle grade reader interested in movie making will love this story.
