Kids' and YA graphic novels honored at ALA

This year's American Library Association Midwinter Meeting brought some nice surprises to the graphic novel world in the form of the ALA's Youth Media Awards. EL DEAFO, Cece Bell's graphic novelized memoir about growing up hearing impaired, was named a Newbery Award Honor book this morning, and the author/illustrator duo of cousins Mariko and Jillian Tamaki brought home both Caldecott and Printz Award honors for THIS ONE SUMMER, a YA graphic novel tackling the topics of summer vacation and the bittersweet pains of growing up.
